Frost persisting throughout day, overcast, dry, wind nil.

Jackdaw (14+) on trees by main pond.

The kestrel foraging conundrum. No, not a game from Banzai, but the question of what kestrels can be eating in these cold conditions. Their behaviour is 'chat-like' -- flying down from often quite low perches to alight on the ground very briefly (often for no more than 10 seconds), then flying back up to either the same or nearby perch. Seen on 31/12, this has been happening quite frequently recently at Hillside House. Kestrel perch-hunting in this way at MSE, near the big oak, and on the edge of the spinney by A1065.

Roe deer (2, no antlers, slight size disparity, perhaps a stable pair) on field immediately north of meadow, probably disturbed by dog-walkers. Negotiated new stock fencing to depart into Horseshoe Plantation.

This species is said to be quite sensitive to pollution (Jeffries & Mills 1990).
