WHITE-TAILED EAGLE immature circling drifting ESE across plot 1237 BST, 40-60 metres up, mobbed by buzzards, jackdaws etc. Tail bicoloured (feathers quite pale but with dark edges, so not a full adult).

(Almost certainly this individual was seen the next day at Pensthorpe and was identified as one of the Isle of Wight release programme juveniles. The first of these were set free in 2019, so this one could be around 30 months old. One eagle (G393, a male) has previously spent significant time in north-west Norfolk.)

[Brief bird survey of 10 churchyards between Raynham and Dereham -- recording for 20 minutes at each site. 27 Maximum of 10 species at any site, 27 species in total, apparent difference between mowed and unmowed (“untidy” sites being more species-rich). Species included spotted flycatcher (at just one site). Several species were present at one rather remote churchyard, but not at any of the others. Invertebrates included butterflies (meadow brown, ringlet, red admiral, etc.), dragonflies (Aeshna grandis, common darter); honeybee nests in at least three of the church towers.]

A note on the excellent work done by Raynham Estate on grazing meadows adjacent to the plot -- starting around 2019, several fields that had previously been left almost unattended were renovated, after an interlude of about 5-6 years. First they were topped, then fenced by a contractor, and finally black cattle were turned out to graze there in the summer months.

Patches of these meadows right next to the plot now show a rich mixture of damp meadow flowering plant species, including a sedge (Carex acutiformis), at least two Juncus (rush) species, marsh marigold, ragged robin, southern marsh orchid (appeared just recently), cuckoo-pint, creeping buttercup, and sorrel. Bird diversity has increased markedly and thrushes, corvids, herons etc. are often or usually present now. (Previously the grass was rank and matted and few birds foraged there). The herons often follow the cattle around as they graze.

Given the location, time of year and the photographs you sent it is likely to be Sarcoscypha austriaca var. austriaca/Scarlet Elfcup. It is a common fungus found in damp places at this time of year."
